The Tragedy

http://www.comcast.net/news/national/index.jsp?cat=DOMESTIC&fn=/2006/10/04/491902.html

I morn with these people over the five little girls that died because of the shooting this past Monday. I grew up near the Nickel Mines and I knew the people who lived there. I attended a one-room schoolhouse as a child with some of these grandparents. This was a shocking blow to everyone in the county.

I've heard rumors that the Amish will either dismantle or burn the school. I don't blame them. Their surviving children will not go back there. Whatever they decide to do, they will put this horror to rest. Personally, I think I'd burn the school and till under the ashes to bury the entire thing.

This has been a sad, sad week.

I saw it on the news and of course you were the first person I thought of. It doesn't make any sense at all, its mind boggling.

Lancaster continues to make the news in all the wrong ways.

I like the idea of burning the school and plowing it and planting corn or wheat. I hate memorials to this kind of thing.

Life is full of powerful people picking on the unpowerful. It is sad that the Amish, who hurt no one have to suffer so much in this instance.

It is a sad blog post.

But Julie, you have many beautiful blog posts. The contrast makes you blog more real.

OK, Tom, here's a thought...
You said that Lancaster continues to make the news in all the wrong ways.

How about this...

Those who don't know us, won't leave us alone. If you look back on my blog you will see the post about the puppy mill activists in their ugly cloak or self-righteousness and self appointed glory poking at not only the Amish, but everyone who lives in this area. You will also see my rounds with these overly glorified idiots.

You know that the saying goes, a fox smells it's own nest first. To bad people can't practice this.

Then there's you...You said that you wanted to be a Californian all the way and disowned your own heritage. You told me that much. You were born here and are a part of this history, yet you deny it. Why? Is it because of the idiots that can't keep away because they have to try and destroy anything and anyone who's not like them?

This area with it's history, different life style and everything about it, has so much to offer this country and this world. It will not go away because of a bunch of people who are threatened by it's difference and by the difference of those who live in it.

Changing who we are because of someone who is threatened by our difference is not a reason to change at all. People who can't accept us for who we are should just go away. We don't need this aggravation.

It saddens me that you would rather deny your heritage and try to cover it by becoming someone else.

You are right. These gentle people didn't need to have their children slaughtered.

I thought about you all week. These shootings are among the most perplexing, horrific incidents of my lifetime. This particular shooting is cruelly ironic.
